“Yet when I surveyed all that my hands had done and what I had toiled to achieve, everything was meaningless, a chasing after the wind; nothing was gained under the sun.”
Ecclesiastes 2:11 NIVUK
“And I saw that all toil and all achievement spring from one person’s envy of another. This too is meaningless, a chasing after the wind.”Ecclesiastes 4:4 NIVUK
What’s the point having a beautiful house of there is no one there to admire it? What delight is there in owning a fast car if there is no one to overtake? What’s the goal in having a title if there is nobody to belittle by it? Why display your awards and trophies if there’s nobody to remember your achievements?
At some point you have to stop and ask yourself why you do what you do. Do you derive inner satisfaction from all your hard work? Who are you really working for? Yourself? Or your children? And when you have achieved your goal, what next?
I saw this funny Nigerian comedy clip of a man at a job interview? He was asked “What do you want to become in life?” He answered, “I jos want to become chairman”. Then again he was asked”What is your goal in life?” He responded, “I just want to make plenty money so I can jos dey waste am like that!”
In all truth, this man was expressing the life-dream of most working people. Get to the top of whatever and make so much money that you don’t care about it anymore. Welcome to both vision and mission statements of the human rat race.
The question is, once you do arrive at this ludicrous objective, and it’s highly likely you won’t, how long will your satisfaction last until you start craving to do something more satisfying?
If you owned everything that you ever wished for your life would be absolutely meaningless if nobody else cared to notice.
Facebook is the virtual place where we put out all our wares, fish hooks and baits for people to go “ooh! aah! We admire!”
Mr. Mark Zuckerberg, creator of Facebook(for those who didn’t care to know) himself admitted that there will be no “Dislike” button because that would not be socially positively stimulating. After all, we do indeed seek to derive satisfaction from people noticing and admiring our pics, profiles and posts enough to go a step further to ‘like’ or make good comments! Even some of our Facebook “haters” who we ‘befriended’ come back to see and ‘admire’ what more they can hate us for. Indeed it is very addicting to be admired and approved. And that’s just about it all our lives!
Well, I’ll say that the greatest ever satisfaction that you can ever experience is to know, without a shadow of a doubt, that God your Creator approves of your wholesome thoughts and actions, even when some of your fellow peeps don’t.
Did you know that one great way to gain Godly approval and great satisfaction is to cultivate an attitude of service to others?
You can be charitable without necessarily working for an NGO(Non governmental organizational).
Instead of concentrating on your self self self, think today about helping someone else sincerely from the heart, not just to gain attention for yourself, but to genuinely serve others.
You will be surprised at how very meaningful and rewarding it is for validating your reason for living!
